PRIDE AND HUMILITY
[[Pro 18:12]] KJV Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
Many see life as a mystery but if you walk closely with God, you’ll know that there’s no mystery in life. Nothing just happens. There are causes and effects. Everything that happens, happened because of a cause.
In the above, the scriptures deal with one of the attitudes that is the root cause of all destruction – Pride. Our opening text contends that destruction does not just come upon a man. No man falls suddenly. Far before destruction will come upon a man, his heart will be haughty. In order words, pride will saturate his heart.
Usually in the New Testament, the human spirit is referred to as the heart of a man. In the Old however, the heart denotes the character (the spirit) of the man. And God shows us in His word that destruction is not possible without pride. Unfortunately, people who walk in pride are so blinded by their pride that they don’t even know that they are proud. This wrong conditioning of the spirit paralyzes a man in his quest and every attemp to advance.
Humility on the other hand is the opposite of everything pride is. Whereas pride brings destruction, humility produces honour. To deal with pride, we must cultivate that attitude of humility. Humility is not a way of talking; it’s a state of the human spirit. Pride and humility cannot co-exist in the same person. Therefore to get ride of pride we must stay humble.
You see, humility activities the grace of God in your life. That grace is what brings beauty and splendor to your life. “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” *(Jas 4:6). Pride will rob you of greatness and honour. Be concerned when people say you are proud. And work on your attitude to improve yourself. Pride is expensive. You can’t afford it. Get in the way of humility. Learn to listen to others. Don’t put yourself first. Treat people like they are valuable to you. Get out of your way to bless others. God cannot look away from such attitudes. He giveth more grace to the humble. Increase in grace.
Prayer:
Father I thank you for your word today. I receive the wisdom to walk in humility. I declare that I have the mind of Christ and therefore have humility in my spirit. I walk in humility by the strength of the Holy Ghost in me in Jesus’ name. Amen.
