THE FORBEARANCE OF GOD
[[Rom 2:4]] KJV Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
God is rich in mercy and forbearance, and longsuffering. Forbearance is restraint and tolerance under provocation. God is able to tolerate a provocative wrong doing for a very long time. In other words, you may be doing something wrong but God will still be nice to you.
This however will not last forever. The reason why God does that is so that you will be able to come to repentance or turn away from that habit before its late. Unfortunately, our opening text shows us that many despise this grace of God.
They ignore all the signs and become nonchalant, and disregard the prickings of the Holy Spirit. They fail to see that the goodness and forbearance of God is supposed to lead us to repentance: a 180 decree turn around from the wrong habits and actions.
This morning, the Spirit of God is challenging us through the word to search our hearts and turn away from things the LORD seems to overlook but prompts us about. What is it that the Holy Spirit has been whispering to you about? Don’t despise Him. Honour the LORD today by turning away from those things that do not please Him. Glory to God!
Prayer:
Dear Precious Holy Spirit, help me to please you. I turn away from anything the grieve you. I yield to your leadings. I give myself completely to your will in Jesus’ name.
